Safety

General

The following is an interim guideline and is subject to change.

Children that attend our club night activities and any training sessions, are expected to be under the strict supervision of their parents or caregivers. Avondale Athletics will do everything possible to keep our club members safe from injury when using equipment and on the track. Our club is based at an open shared space (public park), and supervision of children must be the responsibility of parents or caregivers.

Athletes who show behaviours that obstruct an event, or have the potential to cause harm to themselves or others, may be requested to be removed from participating in that event, and potentially the remainder of the club night. We ask that parents and caregivers support us in making our club night a safe and friendly environment for everyone involved.

All equipment must be cared for and respected.  It may only be used for it’s intended usage.  Only officials and parent helpers may enter the equipment shed (and athletes under the supervision of a parent helper).

Track

  • Check before you cross the track
  • Don’t loiter on the track – a race cannot start unless the track is clear
  • Stand back from the finish line – let the officials process the race and release the athletes
  • The starter gun can only be operated by and official or parent helper with the correct ear protection – please warn bystanders before setting up the race

Long Jump

  • Athletes should sit to the side of the long jump run-up
  • Non-competing athletes must keep well back from competing athletes

High Jump

  • Only officials and parent/senior athlete helpers may setup the high jump bar
  • You may not start your jump unless the mat and its immediate surrounds are clear of obstacles.

Shotput

  • All athletes must be at least 2 metres behind the back of the shotput circle
  • Only Official’s and parent helpers may be in front of the shotput circle – athlete helpers must help from behind the circle
  • Spinning is not allowed except with the permission of the Safety Official

Discus

  • All athletes must be at least 2 metres behind the back of the discus circle
  • Only Official’s and parent helpers may be in front of the shotput circle – athlete helpers must help from behind the circle
  • Spinning is not allowed except with the permission of the Safety Official

Something missing? Please let a committee member know and we will add it.
